CELEBRATING 70 YEARS OF IMPACT

On February 22nd, 1955,
Professor C. Grove Haines founded the Bologna Center with a bold vision: to foster transatlantic dialogue, advance global peace, and prepare leaders to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. Beginning with just four professors, 10 students, and borrowed classrooms, his initiative was an ambitious response to a post-war era in need of collaboration and understanding. Seventy years later, that vision has grown into SAIS Europe.

As we celebrate this milestone, we also look ahead. The 70th Anniversary of SAIS Europe offers a moment to reflect on our extraordinary legacy and renew our commitment to the ideals that have defined us since our founding. It is an opportunity to chart a bold course for the future, one rooted in academic excellence, global collaboration, and a steadfast belief in the power of education to address the most pressing issues of our time.

SAIS Europe plays a pivotal role in this effort as the European hub of Johns Hopkins University. Located in Bologna, Italy, it is one of three SAIS campuses strategically positioned across three continents. Guided by our strategy, Vision 2030, we are committed to ensuring that SAIS Europe remains at the forefront of international affairs education as a center of academic excellence in Europe and the Mediterranean.

Our vision for the future is anchored in four key priorities: expanding our world-class faculty to bring fresh perspectives to global challenges, deepening partnerships with Johns Hopkins University campuses and European institutions, broadening access to education through increased financial aid, and modernizing our facilities to support innovative learning and research. These pillars will empower SAIS Europe to continue shaping leaders equipped to address the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

At the heart of this progress is our community: an exceptional faculty, dedicated staff, and a diverse student body united by their shared passion for shaping a better world. And let us not forget our extraordinary alumni—leaders in governments, organizations, and industries around the world—whose achievements are a testament to the transformative power of a SAIS education.

As we mark 70 years of impact, we reaffirm our commitment to building on this remarkable foundation. Together, we will ensure that SAIS Europe remains a beacon of academic excellence and global leadership for generations to come.

With gratitude and excitement for the future,
