The Bologna Class of 1972 launched its first initiative during their 40th reunion in 2012. Inspired by many other Bologna classes, they decided to raise funds to establish the Bologna Class of 1972 Fellowship providing critical support to SAIS students. Since 2012, 7 students have benefitted from the Bologna Class of 1972 Fellowship:

In 2022, ten years after this successful effort, Geert van Brandt and Amos Tincani launched another initiative to celebrate their 50th reunion, notably a collective contribution to the C. Grove Haines Professorship.

The Bologna Class of 1972 was the very last one to be recruited and led by Dr. Grove Haines, the visionary founder of the Bologna Center. In recognition of his accomplishments, the C. Grove Haines Professorship was established at SAIS Europe upon his death in 1992 by his widow and his friends - including many great faculty members like Grosser, Hassner, Mancini who were instrumental in securing the Bologna Center's position in Europe and who assisted Director Haines in his lifetime commitment to developing transatlantic relations. This professorship permanently recognizes SAIS Europe resident faculty members and it's held by Mark Gilbert, Professor of History and International Studies.

"It is only fitting for us to be the first class to collectively contribute to this fund. Our donations will be recognized at the Alumni Weekend and can be inspirational for many other alumni. We set a collective class goal of at least $72,000. One classmate has already put $10,000 on the table to set us on our way! To double our joy, SAIS Europe alumnus and Advisory Council Chairman James Anderson (Bologna, '81) offers a dollar-for-dollar match for any gift or multi-year commitment our class makes toward the C. Grove Haines Professorship. This generous offer will double our $72,000 target contribution to $144,000."

This year, the Class of 1972 Fellowship recipient is Ms. Natalia Villegas, from Colombia.

Members of the Class of 1972 who would like to get involved in the initiative, should contact the Bologna Center development staff.
