Enzo Grilli was a professor whose ties to SAIS spanned nearly 40 years. A native of Genova, Italy, Grilli graduated in 1968 from the Bologna Center, and received his doctorate from SAIS in 1975. He joined the faculty in 1976 for two years as an adjunct professor in the International Economics Program. He also served as an adjunct professor from 1981 to 1982, 1986 to 1993 and 1995 to 1997.
In 1998, Grilli began teaching full time, having been awarded a two-year appointment to serve as the AGIP Chair in International Economics at the Bologna Center. Most recently, he was professor of International Economics at the Washington campus. Always a favorite of students, he won the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association's Excellence in Teaching Award in 1997 and 2001.
In addition to his academic roles at SAIS, Grilli had a distinguished career working for international organizations, the Italian government and several Italian universities. During his professional years in Washington, he held several leadership positions at the World Bank, including serving as director of development policy and as director of the economic advisory staff. He later represented Italy and other constituency countries as Executive Director on the boards of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. He also held a JD degree from the University of Genova.
Enzo Grilli died of a heart attack on October 28, 2006 in Washington, D.C. He was 63. Everyone who knew him valued his warm-hearted friendship as well as his devotion to students. Dean Jessica Einhorn remembered him as a scholar, a teacher and a wonderful human being. He is survived by his wife, Marlie, and two daughters, Vola and Mary.
The Enzo Grilli Memorial Fellowship
In 2007 an initiative was launched to establish a permanent Enzo Grilli Memorial Fellowship Fund to finance in perpetuity a fellowship for SAIS students of any nationality in Bologna and in Washington. This initiative, led by two of Enzo Grilli's former students, Silvia Zucchini (BC99, DC00) and Alessandra Campanaro (BC'00, DC'01), seeks contributions from among nearly 2,000 former SAIS students who took professor Grilli's courses in Bologna and in Washington.
In 2013 the initiative reached its first goal ($100,000 to open the endowment) thanks to the generosity of anonymous donors.
